What is it?
Cradle of Creativity is a Performing Arts festival and Professional Programme, scheduled for 20-27 August 2023, to be held at the Market Theatre, Windybrow Arts Centre, Sibikwa Arts Centre, National Children’s Theatre, and other venues in Gauteng.

ASSITEJ SA invites you to be part of an intercultural conversation which includes opportunities to share research (both academic, artistic and action-based), artistic and pedagogical skills, experiences, insights and approaches into theatre and performing arts for young audiences. Each day of the festival offers workshops, presentations, panel discussions and roundtables, focusing on a topic connected to the work on at the festival. The conference programme takes place generally between 13h00 - 15h00, in a session that will be livestreamed to ASSITEJ members globally, with workshops taking place outside these hours.

● Sunday 20 August - Inclusivity and Accessibility in TYA - how do we ensure that all children and young people can access the arts?

● Monday 21 August - Playwriting for Young Audiences - how do we ensure indigenous, relevant, age-appropriate content?

● Tuesday 22 August - Performing Arts for Teens (14+)

● Wednesday 23 August - Performing Arts for Early Years (0-6 years)

● Thursday 24 August - Dance for Young Audiences

● Friday 25 August - Arts as / in Education - what is the special focus on the role of the arts in empowering the curriculum and lifelong learning?

● Saturday 26 August - Child/Youth Participation in the Arts - how do we ensure that children and young people participate in different ways in the work that is created for/with/by them?

● Sunday 27 August - The Art of Listening in TYA: how do we listen across language/cultural divides? How do we listen to our audiences?

Our children and young people deserve the best quality arts experiences we can offer, and to provide these, we need to be both rigorous and generous - rigorous in researching the efficacy and impact of what we are attempting, and generous in sharing our knowledge and expertise across our network. By reaping the rich harvest of experiences from across the globe, we can question, deepen and expand our own practices. Ultimately ASSITEJ SA sees the Cradle of Creativity Professional Programme as a space in which we can meet across cultures, disciplines and perspectives.
